Fail-Safe Flowers
print

Looking for the easiest and most satisfying plant for kids to grow? Our vote goes to the pansy. Here's a sure-fire way to cultivate this flower:
1. Purchase young plants at a garden store or farmers' market.
2. Plant three plants together in a clump, with clumps 6 to 8 inches apart, as early in the season (after last frost) as possible. They like full to partial sun but will wilt if they get too hot, so in warmer climates some shade is best. You may also keep them in pots inside, as long as they get enough sun.
3. Water frequently.
4. Pinch off blossoms just underneath their base as they wilt, and pansies should bloom all summer long.
